What the critics say

From a review for Opera News

http://www.metoperafamily.org/operanews/_archive/12597/reports.12597.html

“As Belcore, baritone Simon Keenlyside (company debut) was right behind her. Though he failed to make a memorable vocal impression (partly Donizetti's fault -- the tessitura is awkward), this Schubert specialist turned out to be a highly accomplished slapstick comedian, and he and Alagna seemed to be having the time of their lives.”

”The English baritone Simon Keenlyside had a strong Met debut as Sergeant Belcore, who swaggers into town and first wins Adina's hand. Mr. Keenlyside has intelligence and a rich, lyric voice that he wisely never forces. And it certainly gave this love triangle plot some dramatic edge when, for once, Belcore was a dashing young man rather than some oafish comic foil.”
