.....All the orchestral virtues between tender lyricism and a brutal inferno of sound did also triumph in Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem (with its alternation of devotion and those numerous expressive climaxes – furthermore the vocalists conductor Rattle had to coordinate were nothing but impeccable too. They were soprano Andrea Gruber as well as the tenor Robert Tear and the bass Simon Keenlyside. And the collective vocal contribution of the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus was no less accomplished....
