What the critics say

Glasgow Herald, August 31, 1998

.

Both Rodgers and Keenlyside were able to convey by inflection and gesture the needle-sharp detail of the music in a way that would have been impossible in large-scale surroundings. In this respect, as in others, this was an ideal Wolf recital, with two contrasted voices and personalities enhancing the choice of music without breaking the continuity of the experience. Since all the songs were based on poems by Morike, the recital had another sort of unity to which the singers responded, Keenlyside in particular relishing the chance to mingle lyricism with wryness via the slow, dreamy lines of Um Mitternacht and the thundery moods of Der Jager.”
