Festive Christmas music from Dresden
The Gala Concert in the Frauenkirche
For the first time, the traditional Christmas season’s concert takes place in the rebuilt Frauenkirche. Top-class artists like Christine Schäfer and Simon Keenlyside participate in the musical program.
The programme "Adventliche Festmusik aus Dresden" will be broadcast on Sunday, 3 December 2006, at 6 pm (CET) by the Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF).
After the extraordinary Advent season’s concerts in the "construction site Frauenkirche" between 2000 and 2004, which were held to stake the reconstruction of the landmark of Dresden, this year’s concert takes place in the reopened church for the first time. Apart from the already traditional character of tuning people into the Christmas season, the benefit of the concert persists. The ZDF supports the important work of the Dresdner Frauenkirche for peace, reconciliation and tolerance between people and religions with a donation call.
Top-class artist
The musical program with an emphasis on Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Haendel will be performed by top-class artists: the star soprano Christine Schäfer, the English bariton Simon Keenlyside, the Dresden State Chapel, the choir of the Semper Opera as well as the organists of the Frauenkirche, Samuel Kummer. The musical conduct lies in the hands of another world-wide renowned Dresdner artist: Peter Schreier.
Christine Schäfer, the Berlin soprano, substitutes Cecilia Bartoli, who has fallen ill at short notice. The world-wide celebrated singer was the star of this year’s festival in Salzburg, as the press stated in unison - from the "Spiegel" to the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". She inspired the public as Cherubino in the premiere of Mozarts' "Nozze di Figaro", which was broadcast live on television. Anna Netrebko, who sang the Susanna in the same production, on Christine Schäfer: "For me she is one the most accomplished sopranos of our time."
