On romantic pathways
As magical Mélisande and enchanted Pelléas in Claude Debussy’s operatic solitaire they were the past Salzburg Easter Festival’s perfect couple. It was not only the harmonic fusion of the timbres but also a rare kind of inner accordance in the interpretation of the characters that made their performance a special event. Now Angelika Kirchschlager and Simon Keenlyside will stand on stage together again, in a project of a completely different sort, supported not by a top orchestra’s luxury carpet of sound, but completely pure, in a manner of speaking “with soul on the tray”, with the piano as the only partner and commentator. And as both of them are taking the art of lieder singing as seriously as their roles on stage, we may rightly speak of a “real” song recital that does not represent an operatic hit parade in disguise with economical accompaniment. Angelika Kirchschlager has programmed some of her favourite pieces by Franz Schubert, among them the little popular Lambertine and together with Simon Keenlyside she will undertake a Romantic journey, not all on beaten tracks. A selection from Robert Schumann’s Wilhelm Meister settings will be performed for instance, together with examples from Liebesfrühling and Spanisches Liederspiel, furthermore a beautiful series by Brahms and Hugo Wolf. For connoisseurs and aficionados !

Short concert reviews
Theater an der Wien: It goes without saying that in a recital the singers alone are well to the fore. But Angelika Kirchschlager and Simon Keenlyside were joined this time by the pianist Graham Johnson. They are a fascinating trio that brought beauty of sound and harmony. Melancholy and cheerful pieces, presented on the highest level regarding the vocal technique, were equally brilliant.
They presented Schumann, Cornelius, Wolf, Brahms and Schubert. No matter if they are singing solo or duet – Kirchschlager and Keenlyside please with exemplary articulation, with an expression full of colours and facets and with charm. And above all: These songs result in a closed panorama of emotions, dramatic outbursts, moments of exceeding melancholy, musing and longing. Nuanced art of interpretation in text and music, full of love of precious detail!
It was also the Englishman Graham Johnson who was responsible for the quality of the songs’ interpretations. He accompanies sympathetically, in an extremely refined and really delicate way.
With a wonderfully sung “Guten Abend, gut Nacht” la Kirchschlager dismissed in a world in which we may dream. Maybe this exceptional trio will come back soon ?

A perfect couple for Schubert. As Pelleas and Melisande they were the perfect pair from Salzburg’s last Easter Festival but they also are when they get onto the concert platform: At the Theater an der Wien this time, where Angelika Kirchschlager and the Englishman Simon Keenlyside (in absolutely flawless German) with Graham Johnson at the piano gave a ravishing song recital. The Theater an der Wien is competing for its position in the Viennese theatre life, one operatic stagione from time to time is insufficient to make this opera house known differently but specialities like this evening (that was very well attended despite of the heat) help in doing so. La Kirchschlager and Keenlyside, mezzo and baritone with bright colouring and exquisite timbre – being both on stage all the time – sang classical songs by Schubert, Wolf, Schumann, Brahms, less known ones by Peter Cornelius but above all they sang together, song duets that with them proved fascinating scenes of love or quarrel. A particular experience.
