10.08.2007 (Thorsten Steer)

SK will be on the Bavarian TV show, Capriccio, today at 10.30 pm:

     http://www.br-online.de/kultur-szene/sendungen/capriccio/kulturmagazin-1.xml#thema_3

The website has the following text:

A voice that touches at once!

The baritone Simon Keenlyside with his new CD "Tales of Opera"

    (Author: Angelika Kellhammer)

This singer does not fit into any cliché ! He can sing everything: At the moment he is the best Don Giovanni, the critics are at one about this. But with him the "Song to the evening star" also sounds full of tenderness and longing. And nobody "dies" as beautifully as his Don Carlos [sic !]. The English baritone Simon Keenlyside. "Singing simply makes me happy, that's what I realised even as a child when I sang in a choir", he says, "but then the breaking of the voice came, the voice was still there but just very small, all of this took a very long time with me."

So Keenlyside studied zoology first, at Cambridge - and singing only afterwards. Therefore he was nearly 30 at his operatic debut as Count Almaviva in "Figaro". After this he sang with Ricardo Muti at the Scala in Milan for a long time before he conquered the stages all over the world. A late career. But categories like this are not interesting for Simon Keenlyside. He believes in opera and its power to move people. He takes much time for studying roles, fights for expensive additional rehearsals and there is nothing he hates more than star hype. Instead of giving interviews he still prefers to go and watch animals. Today he is 47 and gets better and better - now his first CD has come out ! A portrait of this exceptional singer in Capriccio.

Simon Keenlyside and the Münchner Rundfunkorchester conducted by Ulf Schirmer.
