This is excellent news for Thomas Ades and Simon but please, Simon, leave some time for time for home-based performances this year. I’m still in a depression from my attempts to see you last week in London and chocolate is not an effective solace. There was much to enjoy in the performances but as Julie says, Nozze did lack sparkle and it was difficult to engage with the Count/Countess relationship. So, back to YouTube and the charming 2002 Vienna production.
All we can hope is a Met live transmission followed by a dvd …. not much to ask surely?
Apparently a dvd was made of the Royal Opera Tempest, but Thomas Ades wasn’t satisfied with it, so the production of the dvd went no further.
I too missed out on M of F in London, should have been there this evening,- can’t have Simon as Almaviva? Ah well have to make the best of things so opted to see a completely different and new opera – Judith Weir’s Miss Fortune, and just pop down the road to see our Welsh National Opera’s M of F instead.
Also comforting myself with Songs of War cd – particularly beautiful song new to me ‘Thy hand in mine’, plus Macbeth dvd, of course!
I didn’t go to London last week either for the 2 nights in a row of Simon live that I had been looking forward to for a long time. I couldn’t sit through those two performances without him singing…..moving on….anyway I think it must have been my disappointment over that or a moment of insanity that caused me to dig fairly deep into my pocket to get a seat for his Grange Opera concert in July – the ticket prices are pretty steep, but unlike New York, I can get to the outskirts of Winchester relatively easily. Devon to New York is a rather different proposition, so yes, Liz, like you, I am hoping for a live transmission, as I know that I will not get to the Met this autumn (or probably any other, to be honest).
I could not face Nozze without Simon’s Almaviva either…and yes, Sue, I have tried chocolate as well but it did not work!!!
See you at the Grange Opera, then?
I’m with the others hoping for a live transmission and a DVD of The Tempest. Looking forward to a full report of the Grange Opera concert, Jane.
Liz, I’m going to see M of F by WNO too. If it’s as good as the last time they did it, I think you’ll enjoy it.
Have just seen our WNO dress rehearsal of M of F – great fun, our Suzanna, Figaro, Countess and Cherubino all very good – but the Count? well ok but he could do with looking at 2002 Youtube as I have just done (no, not all of it!) Looked at the sequence which leads to the gardener coming in – Simon shows such variety of expression as each delicious minute goes by! Perhaps every aspiring Count should watch this as an object lesson in how to play the part, Simon is just so brilliant!
Our Countess and Suzanna where same height and build, whereas there is quite a contrast in the Vienna one – in fact the Countess is taller than Simon, and towers over Suzanna!
I hope for all our sakes that Simon will appear as Almaviva here in UK, he does love the part so much.
In the notes in Songs of War cd, there is mention of him appearing in Wozzeck and Eugene Onegin at ROH, no dates, but something to latch on to!
Met opera shows 3 Sat matinees for Tempest, Nov 3rd, 10th, and 17th, but I couldn’t see any mention of transmissions – any one know where to look?
Grange Park looks great – mmm – extend mortgage?! Expect detailed review from you Jane, when you have packed away your tiara! And Antonio – what will you be wearing??
When I posted the message the New Season was not yet published – this morning IT IS and we see that the opening night will be broadcast 10.11.2012.
Yes Antonio, Diana and I hope to see you at the Grange, but possibly before that, as you may be at Elijah…..I do hope Simon is still doing that!
The news about the Tempest being transmitted live is excellent. I hope there will be a screening of it somewhere in this vicinity – it’s usually Exeter.
I should have guessed by the price of the tickets, but I did not know the Grange would be such a smart event!!! I guess I will have to stop eating chocolate and see if I can fit in that old tuxedo!!!! And reaching the place looks difficult enough, especially from Scotland
Hi Julie
Where will you be seeing WNO’s M of F?
Hi Antonio,
From Scotland? Scottish/Italian? Surely you must wear a kilt with a unique special tartan to posh dos?
Cheers both
Liz
Ciao Liz!
I am Italian but I have lived in Scotland for years. I can tell you that Simon’s pronunciation of the Italian language is something that never fails to amaze me!
(I never thought about the kilt! What a great idea!)
Cheers,
Antonio.
