“Keenlyside thrills audience at Spivey Hall”

Saw Simon Keenlyside at a Lieder concert yesterday, Oct 13, southeast of Atlanta, GA. To be specific, at the beautiful, almost full Spivey Hall at Clayton State University. He sang songs from his CD, “Songs of War,” and Lieder by Hugo Wolf (Möricke) and Franz Schubert. He commented on several songs and tied them to his own life. Pedja Muzijevic accompanied him on the piano.

Because the hall is relatively small, SK’s performance was intimate and riveting and deserving of the long applause the enthusiastic audience gave him. Of course, he generously added 3 encores and later, sitting at a table outside the hall, engaged in lively and long talks with the many people standing in line for an autograph. We learned that he flew to Atlanta after three hours of difficult (but rewarding, he said) rehearsal for the upcoming opera, “The Tempest.” Alas, I will only see it when the MET shows the opera live in cinemas–November 10, in Nashville, Tennessee.

SK is certainly a modest and charming man, so gracious to all his admirers. And such a wonderful singer, of course. The comments I overheard during intermission and after the concert were full of wonder and praise.
One of his Tennesseean admirers,
