I watched the ROH transmission yesterday from Buenos Aires and I just wanted to say, I genuinely liked the production! After reading so many discouraging reviews, I didn’t know what to expect and was more than a little worried but I had a great time and enjoyed every minute of it! I went with my mum who hadn’t seen Eugene Onegin before and – on the contrary of what some reviewers said (“that the production was confusing for a first-time viewer”) – she understood the doubles perfectly. The empathy both Onegin and Tatyana felt for their younger versions was striking and very moving. It was heartbreaking too to see that they knew they couldn’t change the past, no matter how much they wanted. We particularly enjoyed when, in the last scene, Tatyana sings “Happiness could have been ours…” and their younger versions come in view, blissfully happy in eachother’s company, the picture of “what would had happened if…” but will never be possible, right in front of the doomed, older couple standing a bit apart and surrounded by their unshakable mementos.

As for the performances – Simon, I thought, was truly in top form: playful, precise, absolutely delightful! It was certainly difficult not to sympathise with him and the last scene was the last straw. MY GOD, his eyes and his voice were ever so expressive! I was literally on the edge of my seat! Stoyanova really surprised me, I was very moved by her portrayal and vocally she was superb. I liked Breslik’s Lenky very much as well (when he challenged Onegin I reached for my mum’s sleeve like an excited and yet terrified five-year old!). Special mention to the chorus, which I found myself enjoying for itself and not as merely a transition from one moment to another.

I am no specialist, by no means! But I wanted to share my experience. And thank you, once again – it will never be enough – for the wonderful job you do with this amazing website!! :)
