Smart and sophisticated, rumpled and sexy, preppy and poised—the many meanings of the navy blazer

Simon Keenlyside. Baritone Opera Singer

Day in the Life: “I’m a very regular guy who has totally fallen in love with the art form of opera,” Keenlyside says. He recently performed Ambroise Thomas’s “Hamlet” with New York’s Metropolitan Opera. “This particular opera is more taxing than I’d like to admit. You have to sing to a 4,300-seat theater without a microphone.”

Blazer Icon: “A blazer means you have it. People like me are street dogs, but give a blazer to someone like Ferruccio Furlanetto [an Italian bass], who is stylish and Mediterranean, and he’ll look good.”

Dunhill blazer $1,295, shirt $250 and tie $130 Dunhill.com; Tom Ford slacks $770 Tom Ford, N.Y., 212-359-0300. Keenlyside will perform in Verdi’s “Don Carlo” during the Metropolitan Opera’s 2010–2011 season, Metoperafamily.org
