Making it look easy

” … Simon Keenlyside and Graham Johnson gave a masterful, intimate and atmospheric rendition of numerous lesser-known art song masterpieces. … Keenlyside and Johnson made a difficult program seem easy to perform and even easier to listen to despite decidedly challenging circumstances: the mark of consummate artists.”

Simon was pondering in Vienna that he might sing the same (changed) programme at Barbican.

How wonderful to see the uniform praise lavished on this unusual song program (and too rare a recital from Simon this year). I wonder if Martineau will return as scheduled for the Barbican recital later this month, and the Strauss Lieder put back in for the Wolf songs?
I just saw a very positive review of the ROH Eugene Onegin DVD in BBC Music Magazine, which I found interesting, as that production was anything but universally well received last season.

It is seldom that ‘sound bites’ are in perfect unison with each other as they were after Keenlyside/Johnson ‘Liederabend’ at the Konzerthaus. Once more BRAVO.

An exceptionally sublime concert.Marvelous singing and marvelous accompaniment on the piano.
Simon is known to live his characters on stage to the fullest and last night he not only sang but also felt and lived each song vocally to the outmost limit and let the audience live and feel each one as well. Thank you Simon for a wonderfully vocally colorful program,
The encore Schubert lieder were superbly sung. As always Simon was his humble self on stage.
Until the Thursday concert with Simon Rattle.

Thank you for tonight’s wonderful recital and in particular for the encore of Schubert’s Die Sterne!
Graham Johnson’s piano accompaniment was brilliant. I hope that Malcolm Martineau is well soon.
Looking forward to your Conte in January.

I am looking forward to both concerts at the Konzerthaus in Vienna on 7 Dec. and 12 Dec. And then followed by ‘La Nozze di Figaro’ on 12 Jan in the Wiener Staatsoper. Three of the highlights of the year.
