In partnership with BBC Radio 3

For over three decades a supremely talented Scottish musician has been the go-to pianist for the world’s greatest singers. The list of artists with whom Malcolm Martineau has collaborated is staggering, and for this special BBC Radio 3 series he partners up with his own selection of esteemed artists – Dorothea Röschmann, Simon Keenlyside and former BBC New Generation Artist, Kitty Whately.

The Royal Conservatoire has a long and proud relationship with Malcolm and, in addition to regular teaching visits as one of our Visiting Professors, it is an honour for us to present him in these wonderful concerts.

This concert will be broadcast at 1pm on BBCRadio 3’s Lunchtime Concert programme between 27 and 30 March 2018. The exact date will be added when known.

“….All of which Martineau is well acquainted with, and matches with unflappable sensitivity to the wide variation in volume and tone, as well as range of notes, that Keenlyside brings to his colourful programme. When he returns to Schubert for his encores, the singer says it is “going home”, and certainly his first half selection, mostly from the posthumously-published Schwanengesang collection, brims with expressive passion – and real muscle from both men in the Wagnerian Der Atlas. …”

It was a real privilege to hear Simon in the intimate setting of the Stevenson Hall at RCS. The last time I heard him live was at Vienna State Opera singing Rodrigo, so this experience of a full song recital was a joyous revelation.
His intelligent and sensitive interpretation throughout the eclectic programme gave me immense pleasure, Bravo Simon!
An added bonus after the performance was his willingness to be stopped in his tracks to grant me a short conversation. A consummate and generous artist.
