Text and translation for Track 16: Dein ist mein ganzes Herz from Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles) by Lehár

Text and translation for Track 16

“Dein ist mein ganzes Herz” from Das Land des Lächelns (The Land of Smiles) by Lehár.

Sou-Chong:

dir, dir ailein!

Wie wunderbar ist dein leuchtendes Haar!

Traumschön und sehnsuchtsbang

ist dein strahlender Blick.

Hor’ ich der Stimme Klang,

ist es so wie Musik.

Dein ist mein ganzes Herz, usw.

Sou-Chong:

Yours is my heart alone!

I cannot exist where you are not,

just as the bloom wilts,

if the sun does not shine on it.

My loveliest song is yours,

because it only comes from love.

Tell me once more, my only true love,

0, tell me once more: I love you!

Wherever I go,

I feel you close by.

I would love to drink in your breath

and sink longingly at your feet,

you, you alone!

How wonderful is your glowing hair!

Dreamily beautiful and anxious with longing

is your radiant countenance.

When I hear your voice,

it is just like music.

Yours is my heart alone, etc.

Thank you so much for the translation. I have listened to this song for years and years, feeling it’s beauty but never knowing it’s translation. I am 66 and married to my High School Sweetheart and these lyrics state so clearly how I feel about her. I am not from a family that ever listened to opera when I was growing up but as an adult 40 years ago I heard some of the great arias by Puccini and loved it. I took a chance and played the CD: Legendary Tenors….which has this aria on it , Track 11, while having an outside sit down dinner for 12 some 25 years ago. After the song my brother Michael turned to me with tears in his eyes said to me,” I don’t understand a word he says but it is making me cry”…………”Mike, yes, you understand…..it really is about feelings and sometimes words are not necessary”. Thank you again for bringing back these feelings and memories.

Breathtaking. My mum’s first (late) husband used to play this gramophone record and also to sing this song to her in the 50’s. One of the most beautiful token of affection someone can offer to a beloved person I think.
Thank you for publishing this text. This song is anchored in my heart. Greetings from Germany. xx

One of my favorites but I never knew the translation. Thanks so much.

Thanks,
I’m learning the German for my Voice class and it’s very helpful to have the proper English translation. Now I can sing the words with meaning.
