Comment found on Forumopera.com: (translation below)
“For the past few months Simon Keenlyside has not been on top form – notably with a disastrous Rigoletto in Vienna in December, which forced him to pull out in the middle of the performance. Today, the baritone has announced that he will take three months off to recover his form. One hears at this point experts who will blame this on his having attempted roles that are too heavy for him. The reality is that Simon Keenlyside, who appears with success on the greatest opera stages, is one more name on the list of very great opera singers who have been brought to the end of their tether by the pressure, the lifestyle and the working conditions prevalent on the opera circuit. When will there be a real questioning of this state of affairs?”
