"….. This rather complex and technically difficult staging …. offered a very special profile of Iago that Gerald Finley was so successful with. It is clear that arriving only in the morning of the performance day, Simon Keenlyside could not play the character desired by the production with all the subtleties and details that had been so seductive with Finley....

… Amélie Niermeyer refuses the usual view of Iago as the spirit of evil, making a dangerous goblin of him, who gets a kick out of playing rather far-going games of seduction with people while keeping completely distanced from them by a biting irony....

Simon Keenlyside seems to have gone through a period when one could worry about his vocal means, but that time is gone: the voice projects, it remains powerful, expressive and, above all, few non-Italian singers know how to sing Italian with that sense of accents, that fluidity and that understanding of the words. Of course, he is less ironic and sarcastic than Finley – he hasn’t rehearsed and his costume has barely been adjusted by the way – but he understood the idea of the staging and tried his best to adapt himself to it. The fact remains that the performance is of such a level that any fault-finding would be out of place : he was a great Iago, one of those who are a thousand miles away from a caricature of the villain, one of those you don't forget, one of those who make history in that role..."
